Former Sgt. James (Jim) Beilfuss, USAF served as a security police officer for the Air Force, even worked as an elite gate guard for part of his service. Right after he volunteered for Desert Storm, he was securing his bike and pulled the cord in an awkward way, actually breaking his back. Doctors dismissed his requests for an x-ray, and it was discovered months later that his back had broken and healed improperly.
Twelve surgeries later, Jim has much of his back fused and is considered a T-6 incomplete paraplegic. He has slowly recovered some feeling and can walk short distances with a cane, however, uses a wheelchair to leave the house. He has found now with paralysis that the world has opened up in opportunities to do adaptive sports, and he is all in. Falling in love with snorkeling, he can’t wait to take on scuba. He will be training with SDI Instructor Stephen Collins of The Dive Shop on McEver.
