What to bring

  • Items to decorate your balcony, can be associated with your boat theme, or something that speaks to your own style.

  • Swim suits, shorts, t-shirts, this is casual!
  • Your dive equipment

Acts of Piracy

  • Acts of piracy can be fun if kept within reason.

Here are the ground rules:

  • No stealing of balcony or boat decorations, boat banners or flags, no water balloons (to protect our precious wildlife, not even biodegradable) and no touching another pirate’s gear. We want to have fun, but safety is paramount.

Island Tours

  • There will be two island tours offered, Wed. and Friday, and the taxi driver can take two people in wheelchairs on each tour.
  • Price for tour is $20 per person.

Before leaving for the Airport

Make sure you have:

  • Passport
  • Flight Itinerary
  • Diver Certification Card
  • DAN Membership Card
  • Log book
  • Credit Cards and Cash (Resort takes Visa, MasterCard, or Discover, not AMEX)
  • Bring medications, necessities (i.e. catheters, etc.) dive computer, regulator, swimsuit on airplane with you (just in case bags get delayed)
  • Use the Dive Pirate luggage tags for your bags
  • Pack lightly: bags less than 50 pounds to avoid penalty fees
  • Limit carry on liquids to 3oz max per bottle and all bottles must fit in a single 1 qt. Ziploc bag.
  • Be at the airport a minimum of 2 hours before your flight.
  • Be sure and wear your trip shirt and your nifty name badge/secret document holder!
  • Switch your phone to airplane mode before you leave the states. You can use Wi-Fi calling setting with your phone on airplane mode for the week w/o international charges
  • Remove batteries from cameras, dive lights, etc. and pack separately

Grand Cayman Airport

Is under construction and the airport layout is changing daily, just keep following the signs.

Once you get to Grand Cayman, follow the herd and line up for Immigration/Customs/Visitors.

  • Have Passport and the form you filled out on the plane ready.
  • Follow signs towards the baggage claim area. Grab a free baggage cart, pile your luggage on and head through Customs.
  • After clearing Customs, exit the building and follow the signs through a maze of construction fencing (about ¼ mile walk) follow the signs to re-enter the Terminal area with the ticket counters.
  • Check in at Cayman Airways desk. The signs are now all electronic, look for the correct check in to Cayman Brac.
  • If you have time to kill, go outside to the temporary home of the Hungry Horse Restaurant to relax a bit!
  • Follow the signs to enter the terminal to go through security and to the gates to catch your flight to Cayman Brac. There are small shops and simple food near the gates.

Cayman Brac Airport and Resort

After the short flight find your luggage at baggage claim and go outside to the waiting vehicles. There will be trucks to take your bags and vans to transport you.

Remember, you are not in the states and not all things are ADA compliant, however, the people here look forward to us every year and make every effort to accommodate us.  

Once you get to the resort:

  • Check in at the front desk
  • Porters will deliver your bags to your room
  • Head to the dining room for some great grub! 
  • Find mesh bag and waivers from Reef Divers II and Dive Pirates Foundation in your room. Complete forms and put gear outside for pick up by 7:00 am
  • If you are to be certified during the week indicate “student” on C-Card section. 
  • Turn in or complete online your Deep Down Challenge pledge sheets today or tomorrow.

Sunday - September 23, 2018

Prior to 7:00 am – Place the Reef Divers provided mesh bag by your front door packed according to their instructions. Fragile items like cameras or dive computers, take to the boat yourself. Reef Divers will take care of your gear for the week except personal gear (snorkel gear, wetsuits). They have a locker room for these items to hang dry or you can take to the room.

Breakfast: 7:00 to 10:00 am 

You can save a trip back to your room if you take your DAN Insurance Card, Certification Card and Reef Divers Waivers and Dive Pirates Waivers with you to breakfast.

Dive Shop check-in 7:30 to 9:30 am, based on room #

  • Meet the Dive Pirates outside the Dive Shop to turn in your DPF Waiver.
  • Take Certification Card, Reef Divers waiver and DAN Insurance card to check-in inside dive shop.
  • Get your dive weights from the dive shop equipment room, ask if you need help.
  • Check on boat departure time (usually about 10:00 am on first day)
  • If diving NITROX, you will be given analysis instructions.  This will cost you $100 for the week.

Diving 

  • Do not get on the boat without crew’s permission
  • Check that you have all your dive gear, hat, sun block, etc. Towels provided on the boat.
  • There will be 1 morning dive, 2 afternoon dives
  • Break for lunch after the first dive and pay attention to when the Captain says the boat leaves for the afternoon dives

Reef Divers enforces the following safety rules:

  • No diving below 60 feet unless you are Deep Dive Certified, with a max. depth of 110 feet.
  • Buddy teams enforced, must leave and return together, no exceptions.
  • All moored dive sites.
  • Boat is partially covered, has a head and space for cameras, etc.

Dive Pirates enforces the following safety rules:

  • Limit 2 dives a day for HSA C divers/RAID D3 Divers/SDI DB3 Divers/SSI Class III Divers
  • No flying before 36 hours after the last dive for all divers with spinal cord injuries. (this means no diving on Friday)
  • Use wetsuits/booties provided for protection

Dinner 6:30 to 8:00 pm (Good time to turn in any last minute Deep Down Challenge pledge sheets, start decorating your balcony. (yes prizes for best balcony!)

MONDAY

Sep 24, 2018

Breakfast:  7:00 to 10:00 am 

Diving:

  • Be at your boat 15 min before departure
  • Boats depart at 8:30 am 
  • 2 dives in the morning
  • Back for lunch – 12:30 to 2:00 pm
  • 1 dive in the afternoon-pay attention to your boat captain’s time of departure
  • Great day to decorate your boat, put up your banner and discuss your plan for Wednesday’s costume contest

Resort:

  • Kayaks are available to rent at the dive shop
  • Bicycles are available at the front desk but remember that the Caymans traffic pattern is opposite of the US…LOOK Right!!!
  • Hammocks are great for reading/napping!
  • If you want a Spa treatment or massage, book early to get the time slot you want Mon. – Fri. 10 am – 6pm
  • Sign up in lobby for Island Tour Wed. or Friday 2pm if interested $20 per person 
  • Welcome Party and Ice Breaker 5:00 pm (wear your name tag and get a free drink)
  • Deep Down Challenge winners announced 
  • Dinner   6:30 to 8:00 pm
  • Coral Reef Presentation 7:30 pm in the Conference Rm  

TUESDAY

Diving:

  • Be at your boat 15 min before departure
  • Boats depart at 8:30 am 
  • 2 dives in the morning (Deep Down Challenge Dive and Photos on Dive 1!)
  • Back for lunch – 12:30 to 2:00 pm
  • 1 dive in the afternoon
  • Optional night dive at 7:30 p.m. – $65 .00 per person, check in with Reef Divers to sign up earlier in the day.
    • Weather permitting, be at dock 7:15pm for 7:30 departure.  
    • Minimum 8 divers 
    • For your safety, it is recommended you have completed at least 20 dives or under the direct supervision of an instructor

Resort:

  • Bingo by the bar 5:00pm (buy-in game w/ prizes) 
  • Dinner 6:00 to 8:30pm (extended hours for night divers)
  • Open Game Night By the Bar (cards, corn hole, ping pong… come have fun!) 

WEDNESDAY

  • Before Dinner start gathering your things to prep for costume contest! Want theme music when announced? Get your request to Theresa ASAP!
  • Dinner 6:30 to 8:00 pm
  • Costume Contest 8:00 to 9:00 pm – must see!  
  • (Gather with your crewmates at the bar and impress the judges sporting your costume theme.  Prizes for best boat theme/presentation and the best individual costume.)
  • Karaoke to follow

THURSDAY

Sep 27, 2018

Breakfast:  7:00 to 10:00 am 

Diving:

  • Be at your boat 15 min before departure
  • Boats depart at 8:30 am 
  • 2 dives in the morning (Deep Down Challenge Dive and Photos on Dive 1!)
  • Back for lunch – 12:30 to 2:00 pm
  • 1 dive in the afternoon
  • Optional night dive at 7:30 p.m. – $65 .00 per person, check in with Reef Divers to sign up earlier in the day.
    • Weather permitting, be at dock 7:15pm for 7:30 departure.  
    • Minimum 8 divers

  • Afternoon Craft fair-local vendors bring their wares 4pm – 6pm
  • Crab races around the bar approximately 5:30
  • (choose your crab to make it through the heats in hopes of making it to the final round.) 
  • Dinner 6:00 to 8:30 pm (extended for night divers)
  • Game Night By the Bar 

FRIDAY

Sep 28, 2018

Breakfast:  7:00 to 10:00 am 

Diving:

  • Be at your boat 15 min before departure
  • Boats depart at 8:30 am
  • No Diving for Divers with Spinal Cord Injuries (sleep in, enjoy the pool, rest up for fun evening and travel)
  • 2 dives in the morning
  • Back for lunch – 12:30 to 2:00
  • No dive this afternoon due to Sat. flights
  • Dive Shop check out 2:00- 5:00 

Tips:  Tips for dive masters is not built in to the price of the trip. We typically tip $100-$150 for the week of incredible valet diving. The dive shop can distribute your tips for you. Gratuity for the waitstaff and housekeeping is included, 12% for the room and 15% for food.  If you would like to tip someone extra you may do so directly to that person.
