Dorian Reeves has always belonged in the outdoors. Born in Corpus Christi and raised in Rockport, Texas, with time also spent in San Antonio, she grew up surrounded by family, salt water, and a love for adventure. She later attended the University of San Diego, drawn there by the ocean, and studied business with a minor in oceanography. Whether boating, surfing, fishing, hiking, practicing yoga, snowboarding, or walking her two Vizslas, Dorian has always built her life around movement, nature, and the water.
A single mom and longtime educator, Dorian has spent more than 30 years helping children as a dyslexia specialist, working with young students in California and Texas. Today, she continues tutoring through her private practice, Miss Dorian Scholars. Her work is rooted in the belief that everybody is good at something, you just have to find it.
Eleven years ago, Dorian was diagnosed with cone-rod dystrophy, a rare inherited retinal disease that has steadily taken her vision. Now legally blind, she continues to adapt with optimism, determination, and grit. She is learning Braille, preparing for white cane training, exploring the path toward getting a guide dog, and mastering tools like VoiceOver technology so she can keep teaching and living fully.
Dorian was certified to dive about 20 years ago and previously dived in places like Playa del Carmen and Jamaica. Although her vision loss forced her to stop diving, she never stopped loving the underwater world. Through Dive Pirates Foundation, she is taking on the challenge of returning to the water, not by giving up what she loves, but by finding a new way to experience it.
For Dorian, this journey is about facing the unknown head-on, staying active, and showing others that even when life changes, you can still keep going. Or, in her words, just keep on trucking.
