Conrad Hutson

Conrad grew up in Georgetown, Guyana, where he learned early how to adapt, work with what he had, and keep moving forward when circumstances were difficult. Those lessons have stayed with him throughout a life shaped by family, military service, education, fatherhood, and a belief that some of our greatest growth comes not from success, but from learning how to respond when things do not go as planned.

A U.S. Army combat veteran, Conrad served during a 2019–2020 deployment to Iraq, where he sustained injuries to his ankle and spine. Those combat-related injuries ultimately led to his medical retirement from the Army and continue to affect his mobility today. He lives with chronic pain, has difficulty standing for extended periods, and continues therapy as part of his recovery.

The challenges extend beyond the physical. Conrad also manages PTSD and a traumatic brain injury. Loud explosions, sudden noises, and crowded or chaotic environments can trigger anxiety and hypervigilance, while his TBI can cause occasional memory lapses, slower information processing, and difficulty multitasking. He has learned to manage these challenges through grounding techniques, controlled breathing, reminders, structured routines, and allowing himself additional time when needed.

Leaving military service also meant adjusting to a different identity and finding a renewed sense of purpose. Rather than allowing his injuries to determine what came next, Conrad continued his education, became a graduate scholar and entrepreneur, and remained involved in the veteran community. He stays active through adaptive sports and continues to challenge himself physically and mentally while approaching new opportunities with an awareness of his limitations and a commitment to doing them safely.

Mentoring has become another important way for him to continue serving, particularly by encouraging young people and fellow veterans to develop confidence, resilience, responsibility, and character.

Above all, being a father remains one of the most meaningful roles in his life. His son gives him another reason to keep growing, trying new things, and showing through his actions that challenges do not have to determine the limits of a person’s life.

Fishing has long been one of Conrad’s favorite ways to find peace, and he also enjoys motorcycles, restoration projects, outdoor adventures, and learning how things work. Whether it is a machine, a project, or life itself, he has always been drawn to understanding problems, adapting, and finding a way forward.

A New Challenge Underwater

Learning to scuba dive will be a completely new experience, and that is exactly what excites Conrad about it.

Rather than focusing only on what changed after his injuries, diving represents an opportunity to discover what his body and mind are still capable of. He approaches the challenge with curiosity, respect, and a willingness to learn. Having always found peace around the water, he is especially looking forward to experiencing what it feels like beneath the surface: quiet, focused, present, and temporarily removed from everything happening above.

Being selected by Dive Pirates Foundation means opportunity. It is the chance to experience something Conrad may not once have believed was accessible after injury and to expand his own understanding of what is still possible.

He hopes the journey will also encourage other veterans and people facing major life changes to recognize that adaptation is not surrender. Life may look different from what was originally planned, but different does not have to mean less meaningful.

Most importantly, Conrad hopes his son remembers this chapter as another example of continuing to show up. To try. To fail sometimes. To learn, adapt, and keep living.

He is deeply grateful to the Dive Pirates community and supporters who make opportunities like this possible. Their support goes beyond training, equipment, and a trip. It gives people the chance to challenge assumptions about themselves and create new memories with the people they love.

For Conrad, this adventure represents: A new depth of possibility.
